Introduction of the author
Archaeological and historical monuments and relics of the constant change of our cultural landscape are part of our cultural heritage, which in turn is essential for the identity of our society. The answers to the questions who we are and where we come from, definitions of home and culture, all this requires the knowledge of our past. Looking at the past as a dark forest, it leaves behind, while treading a little predictable way in the future, are ancient places and objects that you can touch and see signposts that show us where we once have gone along. Rheinhessen is full of such milestones, and they let us look back many millennia into the past.
Now one could really expect from an archaeologist to report based on the current state of scientific knowledge about these monuments. But you can such as a prehistoric monument like the Long Stone on the Wörrstadt height alone that fair? Scientific knowledge is never a final truth, it is subject to constant revision with new questions and results: Almost no statement made today will be repeated by future generations of researchers identical, in many cases likely to conflicting hypotheses. So, any description monuments of our past at some point become obsolete. But why not make that a virtue? This should succeed, by the focus is directed specifically to those archaeological and historical monuments, of which overtook opinions and statements are known - and from the realm of myths and legends that were once commonplace, and even in modern times often greater develop effective force than some sober scientific analysis. The selection of one of the monuments was so after the test is whether there is an older, legendary interpretation of it. Initial fears that this could be particularly important objects outside ago, remain dispersed gradually, for precisely those parts of the cultural heritage of which we are well known to be shrouded in regular way by early reviews of their origin, function or effect. We must start in the distant past, some older than the kind of man himself As a result, many facets of the cultural landscape genesis of a new page will be illuminated. so that those interested can study them yourself and to other interpretations are possible -
The sources are varied, but care was taken largely to its easy accessibility. This is also an indication of the intended works and further reading.
